O’Connor/ Kaufmann & Miles

November 10, 2009 at 6:45 pm (Uncategorized)

“A Good Man is Hard to Find”

Examples of foreshadowing (Misfit in the newspaper, cat, graveyard)
Would the family have lived had they not recognized them?
Whose fault was it? Could you blame the parents? the grandmother? the Misfit?
Does experiencing the injustice of the system mean you can enact your own justice? Where is the boundary between public and private justice?
The Misfit didn’t kill the family only the grandmother.
Why do we dislike the grandmother? She is a talker, manipulative, judgmental, obsessed with herself.

“Queer Kids Say No to Gay Marriage”

Is this too harsh on the gay community?
Does this blog undermine the idea of marriage?
If gay people don’t want marriage, they shouldn’t have one, but they should not prevent others from having it.
As an issue, gay marriage only helps those who are married, not the whole gay community.
What are these bloggers for? Who are they in alliance with if not upper-middle class white people?
People of color, immigrants without papers, prisoners, single mothers, the marginalized
Difficulty of relating to the marginalized–recognizing different groups without collating them into one.

De Tocqueville, Anaan, Diamond

November 4, 2009 at 11:12 pm (Uncategorized)

De Tocqueville

Why does Jefferson point out that we should fear the executive and judicial branches?
American founders established a system of checks and balances.
Is there a current abuse of the executive branch?
Obama has a democratic house and arguably control over two parts of the system.
The role of each branch has changed drastically over the past 200 years.
Does Geroge Bush’s presidency illustrate an abuse of power?
Did Bush mislead the public? Did he know about 9-11?
Wave of emotion after 9-11 created the Patriot Act, which provided many Americans with a sense of security.
Does a democracy consist of giving everyone the right to vote?

Anaan
Why does Anaan use a little girl to begin his speech?
Appeal to emotions
Appeal to a potential future. We don’t have to make this happen.
Argument for localized and specific justice, not just global “issues”

Is this speech just a promotion or propaganda of the UN? What is the difference between the two?

Jarrad Diamond
Do you think we should intervene in smaller countries with the military?
Should we offer Aid?
We shouldn’t relieve diseases; we should cure diseases.
Cure for AIDS?
Who is to blame for the destruction of the fertile crescent?
Agricultural cultivation
Overproduction
Empire or occupation (for example, Russia’s occupation of Afghanistan)

Writing Circles? Writing Circles!

October 10, 2009 at 10:55 pm (Uncategorized)

As paper 2 comes in this Tuesday, we will continue the peer-editing process of writing circles. You and a small group of peers will work together all term, for one hour at a time, providing feedback and comments on each essay cycle. To make scheduling easier, I have listed each of your groups below. Find your name and click on the link above it. This link will take you to a doodle poll that will allow you to enter your name (or a pseudonym) with the times that you CAN meet during the term. I’ll do my best to find times for everyone and may have to rearrange groups. Let me know if you have any questions.  –Paul
